I had AVN in both hips and had my left hip replaced March 24, 2010 by Dr. Joel Matta. I used a cane for just under two weeks, no complications, no problems during recovery and returned to California for my right hip replacement August 3, 2010. Again, used a cane for under 2 weeks. This is my third week and I'm feeling great...walking with a noticeable limp and still sore but each week is an improvement. The anterior approach is the only way to go. Find a good surgeon who has performed a lot of procedures or travel to California to Dr. Matta....it's worth every penney.

Dear Veletta,
Dislocation of a total hip after a previous fracture is more common than in patients treated for osteoarthritis. Patients who have had strokes and subsequent weakness have a higher rate of dislocations. There are options to help your husband. You should seek out an orthopedic surgeon who performs revision total hips and see them in consultation about what to do.

William Barrett

Dear Pauline,
You should definitly see an orthopedic surgeon and have your hip examined and get an xray. These symptoms can mean many things and they are important to check out.

I had both hips replaced 9 yrs. ago. During the first year my rt. hip "popped" out causing so much pain I couldn't walk or sit. After 10 min. or so I had to try to sit down and it popped back in. That hasn't happened since, but the same hip has popped out slightly many times and slid back in. I have recently lost 70 lbs. and have started walking briskly for exercise. I hear popping in my rt. hip with every step I take. I do not hear it when walking normally. I do not have any pain. Does this mean my hip is wearing out? Should I see my Dr. about this?

My husband broke his hip in 2009. He had a total hip replacement in July, 29. We found out then that his hip had never healed although we had been told countless times that it had. My husband is very independent and stupid. He has had numerous strokes in the past one left his right side weak. He was up and walking when his hip broke. He has been wheelchair bound sense. His hip has become dislocated twice sense the surgery not even a month ago. I believe it is because he hasn't followed hip precautions. His hip was found to be dislocated yesterday. He has alienated his ortho surgeon. I am at my wits end. What are our options? Thanking you in advance for your advice.

Dear Dr. Gopalan,
1. I do not perform surface replacement but in small lesions it would be applicable but in large head involvement it would compromise implant support.

2. Revision with a ceramic head using a metal adaptor on neck and ceramic liner would be most appropriate, fortunately the fx rate of ceramic on ceramic is very low.
Regards,
William Barrett

Hello Dr. Barrett,
I was wondering what can be done for me, I am 59 and the RT hip is shot, degenerative arthritis, I have been around for a long time and am an Orthotist.
I am very active and would like to stay that way. My friend has a Birmingham procedure and is now very active. It seems to me the less invasive the better. I am 190lbs, 6 feet tall and otherwise in good condition.
What should I do?

Dear Mary,
We do perform patellofemoral replacements at Valley Medical Center. The indications are fairly restrictive.

I had ACL reconstruction and was told I had arthritis under my knee cap. I believe it is isolated arthritis and think I might be a candidate for Patellofemoral Joint Replacement. Is this a surgery the Valley Ortho Joint Center performs if the candidate qualifies. I'm an active 55 year old and feeling severly limited in what I can do physically. I'm not sure if this is the proper forum as this is not a reply
